Because fat is not just fat.
If you want to shed those pesky kilo’s, its about time you stopped looking at being fat as a generic thing with a generic, one size fits all solution. Because unless you have literally been eating all the pies (or chocolate or ice cream or beers) and doing very little exercise which would inevitably lead to weight gain and stagnant weight loss, then there are specific factors that come into play that make weight loss SO MUCH EASIER if you know which type of fat you are, and what is causing you to BE fat.
My clients regularly seek me out for weight loss advice, and I think most of them come in expecting me to simply dictate what they should and shouldn't eat, tell them to increase their exercise and be on their merry way. The problem is, this doesn't work for the majority of people. Or it may work short term, and then we’ll hit a road block and weight will stop shifting no matter how much they train or don’t eat. Why? Because our bodies are complex things and getting more and more complex with all the stress, processed foods and toxins we are surrounded by on a daily basis.
I can generally look at a body shape and determine what’s going on, and it’s very rarely simply a matter of sending someone out the door with a diet plan (although that is always included too). There are different guidelines for different body shapes. Different foods, different exercises, certainly different vitamins and minerals to prescribe, and most importantly different hormones to balance.
Here are a few examples of types of fat I see and how I get weight loss results that don’t require endless days in the gym or juice fasts:
The Apple: Here we see weight predominantly on the tummy region. Guidelines tell us that females need to be below 80cm and males below 98cm around their waist (just above the belly button) to be out of the insulin resistance danger zone, which is pre-diabetic, also known as metabolic syndrome. A large waist immediately tells me that we are most likely dealing with insulin resistance, where your body is not breaking down and using glucose and it is therefore being stored as fat.
Treatment: Addressing the adrenals - your stress response - is almost always the first step in weight loss in an insulin resistant person, and fat loss results happen quickly once we sort this out. This may include reducing the amount of exercise you are doing to stop your body going into stress mode, increasing and improving your sleep, and assessing and treating your gut and neurotransmitters which may be causing you anxiety, depression or to feel stressed. An anti-inflammatory diet is also required to get your body into an alkaline state (but not too alkaline!). With these factors addressed weight tends to melt off.
The Pear: If you have a fat bum and thighs then immediately I will be looking at your hormone levels. An imbalance in your oestrogen hormones will often mean a bigger butt and thigh area, and this can be a very tricky place to lose weight, especially using only diet and exercise. Men may find they have man boobs growing, showing signs of a hormone imbalance too.
Treatment: a combination of hormone stabilising food, exercise and supplements will make a significant difference to someones body shape if they are suffering an imbalance or hormone excess, which can be determined through blood and saliva testing. Food changes including eliminating dairy and grains can certainly help, as will doing a hormone detox, gut cleanse and increasing liver function with herbs like St Mary’s Thistle and green tea.
Sausage Arms: Ever feel like you just cant shift weight on your arms, no matter how many pushups or dips you do? It is SO frustrating , especially for those girls wanting to wear singlets or strapless dresses. It can be emasculating for men too. Fatty flabby arms can indicate a lack of testosterone in both men and women, which is another form of hormone imbalance.
Treatment: Again a hormone imbalance requires supplementation and dietary changes to get the body charging and complying to weight loss. For men and women the herb Tribulus can be used to increase testosterone, and for women we can also clear out the excess oestrogen to re-balance your hormones too. This will also help sufferers of bad PMS, PCOS and Endometriosis too!
Just Fat: Then there’s always those who just feel like they accumulate fat EVERYWHERE. The non-discriminatory fat, which goes wherever it wants except off your body. This type of weight gain is where more extensive analysis comes into play, especially for those who feel like they eat well and exercise daily but the fat just won't move! I will start investigating your thyroid, which controls your metabolism; your stress levels, your potential food intolerance or allergy. All of these things will keep you fat and inflamed no matter how hard you try to lose weight, and once corrected fat starts to disappear.
Treatment: Depending on the outcome of my analysis and testing, we will modify your diet and exercise and potentially supplement your thyroid with minerals such as iodine, selenium and zinc, or eliminate your food allergy and do some repair work with specific probiotics to heal and seal the damage caused.
So there you go! Fat is certainly not just fat. If you are struggling to lose (or even put on) weight then email me firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a consultation either face to face or online and we'll work together to get the weight off for good!
